1. VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX For Boys

Highlights

The Kidizoom DX is a durable smartwatch for kids available in three colors and safe materials. The touchscreen screen is large but still fits on the wrist of a child and the band is comfortable and can withstand a bit of water (not recommended for swimming).

While the watch offers the standard features (stopwatch, timer, alarm, and time) it appeals to children via other features. As such, it comes with a built-in camera that can be used to take videos and pictures. The captured content can be stored on the watch until the kids come in the house and download it using the provided micro USB cable (also used for recharging the Lithium-Ion battery).

Besides videos and photos, the DX watch also comes with games, activities, and has an incorporated motion sensor. It also serves as a voice recorder and has voice-changing effects and photo effects. Lastly, the smartwatch also has a calculator, so children can use it for homework (where it’s appropriate).

Why We Chose This

The touchscreen is easy to understand (especially for kids familiar with tablets and smartphones) and the device comes with a series of games and activities that will keep kids busy. Also, it allows them to take photos and make videos without damaging expensive equipment.

2. Casio DW9052 - 2 G-Shock Watch For Boys

Highlights

Perfect for an adventurous spirit, this G-Shock quartz watch is durable (as expected) and comfortable to wear for long periods of time. It features an all blue rubber case and bracelet, which makes it very eye-catching and easy to accessorize with casual and sports outfits.

It comes with all the standard G-Shock features such as one alarm, chronograph functions, and electro-luminescence backlight (which is very bright and easy to activate). While it doesn’t have many of the fancy features usually promoted in more expensive G-Shock watches, it is enough for most of us.

We also love the fact that it can be worn while doing water sports or working in the sea since it has very good water resistance.

Overall, it’s a basic timepiece with a quartz movement that’s both reliable and accurate. The side buttons are easy to access and the interface is quite easy to understand (unlike it happens with more complicated watches).

Why We Chose This

This G-Shock is the best watch for kids who enjoy playing outside or on the water. It is durable and looks good on a child-sized wrist since it is smaller than other G-Shock watches. Powered by a Swiss Quartz movement with three hands, this Back to School timepiece is both appealing and reliable. While it’s not a toy, it is affordable and durable, so kids can really wear it to school without attracting unwanted attention.

The case and buckle clasp are made from a beautiful transparent plastic that lets you see the mechanism inside. The movement is controlled by a push/pull crown and the beautifully colored hands (bright orange and blue second hand) rest on a large, milky-white dial.

The large face is easy to read and features an analog dial with Arabic numerals and neon orange hands (the same color as the band loop). Everything is protected by a scratch-resistant acrylic crystal lens and tied together by a beautiful silicone rubber strap with a blue grid pattern.

Overall, the Swatch GS149 Archi-Mix Back To School is a beautiful first watch for a child who enjoys wearing a simple and reliable timepiece. Also, the color scheme is well-balanced and fun, which adds to the experience.

Swatch has some nice watches for boys and girls and the Back to School design is one that fits both kids and adults. As such, it is a watch that will stay with you for a long period of time, allowing the user to bond with it and create lots of fun memories. It is the perfect gift to offer a child who is just starting school, but it can also be the gift that marks a big step in a child’s life (such as starting middle school).

The quartz movement is reliable and the dial features a nice Dart Vader helmet design. However, the red hands and Arabic numeral hour markers may be a bit difficult to read. To set the time, you get to use the beautifully adorned push/pull crown.

The strap is a combination of shiny and matte leather and it’s sturdy enough to resist the antics of an active child. Of course, this timepiece also works as a gift for an adult Star Wars fan!

Boys Watch Buying Guide

Age

Before we move on to product reviews, we think it’s important to talk about age-appropriate timepieces and how to select the right one.

For instance, a toddler may not understand the purpose of an analog watch, but they will definitely enjoy a smartwatch with games and cool features such as taking pictures and videos. On the other hand, a boy in middle school may be more interested in an analog dial, since this is a design for older children.

So, if you want to get your kid accustomed to the idea of wearing a watch, it’s best to start with a design that’s attractive for them. For instance, a timepiece that features images with their favorite character (like Spiderman or Darth Vader) may be extremely attractive. It also makes your kid the star of the playground and keeps their imagination engaged.

Age is also important when it comes to the durability of the watch and the materials used. For instance, a toddler will try to “taste” the watch so all the materials must be safe. Even more, kids are not exactly careful with their toys and things, so you should consider water-resistance and shock-resistance.

Most of the watches we reviewed feature a silicone rubber strap and plastic cases that don’t scratch or break easily. This way, Junior will have the time to get used to the idea of wearing a watch before it falls apart.

Style

A watch can be the perfect accessory if it fits the outfit and the event. Still, children rarely worry about their watch’ style unless they perceive it as being cool.

So what are some cool watches for boys? We learned that boys love designs that feature their favorite movie or cartoon characters. Also, they love smartwatches that look like the latest high-tech products released by Apple and allow them to boast to their friends about features and games.

Now, most designs available on the market can be divided into two styles: sports and dress.

Boy Sports Watches

If your boy enjoys being outside, practices a sport, or likes to go on hikes, you should consider giving him a sports watch (like the Casio DW9052 – 2 G-Shock). The advantage of these designs comes from their durability and endurance paired with their features.

Still, if Junior is too young to be using a watch with grown-up features, you may want to consider a smartwatch for kids. These products feature games and some even have a built-in camera so kids can document their outdoor adventures.

Boys Dress Watch

Every boy should have a dress watch, especially as they get older and start to understand more about style and elegance.

We reviewed two amazing dress watch designs (from Timex and Swatch) that are a great fit for both formal and informal scenarios. They both feature an analog dial that’s easy to read and fun color combinations that keep kids interested.

Digital or Analog

Most digital watches for boys come with cool additional features such as games and apps to keep them interested in using the watch. It’s also easier to teach a child how to read a digital format watch than an analog one, so we recommend a digital watch for younger children.

Analog designs are best suited for older children, once they start to wear dress watches. The offer for boys’ analog watches is diverse and many feature cute elements such as favorite movie characters or little animals and colorful straps. These elements are important to get the kids interested in wearing and using a watch in the first place.
